Central christens track and field season at AA Invitational

The Golden Eagles got out of the blocks Tuesday afternoon at the Barnett Center.

Aberdeen Central competed in the AA Invitational indoor track and field meet along with Mitchell, Pierre and Watertown. While no team points were kept, the Eagles turned in some quality performances.

Madison Hochstetter started off the meet by winning the girls’ high jump.

“I’ve only practiced a few days,” Hochstetter said. “Just getting my steps down and making sure I get the eight steps is what I think really helps me out a lot.”

The freshman led a delegation that saw Central athletes capture the top three places in the event.

“It’s really good because we all are supporting each other all the time and we want the best for each other,” Hochstetter said. “It’s just like we are always helping each other out and you want to be the best. I think it really pushes me in practice.”

She wasn’t the only Central freshman who had a big day.

David VanVeen ran a solid second leg on the 3,200-meter relay team, which gave the squad a lead it never lost on the way to a lopsided victory.

“I just wanted to run as hard as I could and make sure I stayed in front of Watertown who was straight behind me,” VanVeen said. “Then when I realized he was falling back, I kind of was like OK, then I’m going to lap the person in front of me then.”

VanVeen accomplished that task so anchor runner Daniel Street wanted to make sure the Eagles remained a lap ahead of the competition.

“When I saw that my teammates built that lead up, I was like alright I just have to bring it home,” Street said. “I started off a little fast, but I held it. My goal was to try not let them unlap us so that was the main goal.”

Street finished second to teammate Josh Martin in the 1,600-meter run. The two distance runners are among the top duos in the state.

“It’s weird because in practice we run the exact same times. We’re like the exact same runner,” Street said. “It’s just like our race strategy is different. Mine is kind of like go out in front and hold the lead and his is like trail me until the last couple of laps, so I’m trying to learn how to race like him so I can give him a little bit of a run.”

In one of the closest finishes of the day. Sadie Struble pulled off a come-from-behind effort on her anchor leg to give Central a win in the 3,200-meter relay.

“I kind of just stayed behind the two girls in front and then I still had a lot left so I kicked it and finished,” Struble said.

The junior was a bit uneasy knowing she had to reel in the leaders, but she had what it took at the end.

“I got a little bit nervous,” Struble said, “but we were pretty close to the other team, so I still had some hope.”

The Eagles also received a first place finish from Makenna Glanzer in the 55-meter hurdles and also won the boys’ 1,600-meter relay.

Central’s coaches were as impressed with their athletes’ attitudes as much as their accomplishments.

“I am so excited. We had kids excited, competing and I don’t care if we got first or 31st. The kids competed hard today,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl. “I saw a lot of smiles and I saw a lot of cheering for each other. We said we’re not competing against anyone but ourselves today and that’s not going to change next week.”

Central boys’ coach Greg Murley felt the same way about his athletes.

“The thing that I’m proud of is trying to get a bunch of guys who haven’t been together for a couple years to be good teammates. This was really easy to do,” Murley said. “You didn’t see guys over at the camp all day just laying around going this is boring or whatever. They made it fun for themselves. If we do that we’re going to get better in all areas of the track and in the field.”

Central competes in another indoor meet at the Barnett Center on Tuesday.
