If the opening round of this year’s Class B State Girls’ Basketball Tournament seems a bit familiar, it is with good reason. Every single first-round game today at the Huron Arena is a rematch of a contest that took place during the regular season.
Herreid-Selby Area (20-3) comes into the tourney seeded sixth and faces Corsica-Stickney (21-2) in the final game on Thursday at 7 p.m. The two met at the Corn Palace in mid-February when CS defeated the Wolverines 64-53.
The tournament gets underway with another rematch at noon when Castlewood (20-0) takes on Waverly-South Shore (16-4). Those two teams met late in the season with Castlewood grabbing a 73-64 triumph.
Another opening round rematch pits Ethan (20-3) against Hanson (19-3) at 2 p.m. The two met in early December with Ethan claiming a 70-56 victory.
The other first round game has White River (21-1) against Viborg-Hurley (18-4) at 5 p.m. Those two met at the Corn Palace recently with White River toppling the Cougars 62-57.
It will be interesting to see if those rematches hold true to form or if things will be different this time around.
Only three teams return from last year’s event which was cut short following the opening day because of COVID. Castlewood, Corsica-Stickney and Ethan all played in that state tournament in Spearfish.
