A look back at some of the sports happenings bduring the week of April 4-10:

Last year on April 10, 2020: Palmer “Pete” Retzlaff, a member of the South Dakota State, South Dakota Sports and Philadelphia Eagles halls of fame, died of natural causes at the age of 88 in Pottstown, Penn.

A native of Ellendale, N.D., Retzlaff played 11 years in the NFL, all with the Eagles, as a tight end, receiver and occasional running back, catching 452 passes for 7,412 yards and 47 touchdowns.

Though a star receiver in the pro game, Retzlaff never caught a pass at SDSU, where he was an all-conference fullback. He set 16 school records in football and track (shot put, discus) at SDSU.

A five-time Pro Bowler, Retzlaff was a captain of the Eagles’ 1960 NFL championship team. He later served as the Eagles general manager and as the president of the NFL players association.

10 years ago on April 9-10, 2011: About 30 Brown County Speedway drivers had their cars on display at the Lakewood Mall in Aberdeen to help promote the upcoming season.

20 years ago on April 7, 2001: Two area women won events for Augustana at the Midwest All- Lutheran College Track & Field Invitational at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls. Aberdeen Central graduate Tonia Burgard won the 100-meter dash in 12.62 seconds. Also for the Vikings, Lemmon native Jacey Wheeler won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1:09.18.

30 years ago on April 8, 1991: Rapid City leaders are working toward a $1.4 million plan to renovate deteriorating O’Hara Stadium. The football and track stadium was dedicated on the campus of South Dakota Mines on Sept. 16, 1938.

40 years ago on April 8, 1981: The South Dakota State baseball team ended a 15-game losing streak by defeating Minnesota-Morris 7-6. Claremont native Frank Cutler led the way with two hits, including a homer for the Jacks.

50 years ago on April 7, 1971: Mitchell Daily Republic sports editor Bernie Barnes will not only be writing about the Mitchell American Legion baseball team this summer, but he will be coaching it as well.
