SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central will be represented at every flight during consolation round action today at the Class AA State Tennis Tournament in Sioux Falls.
All of the Golden Eagles singles and doubles teams won twice and lost once during the opening day on Thursday.
“That was goal number one,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz of having everybody still playing on the second day. “We won where we were supposed to. It would have been nice to pull some upsets in those quarterfinal matches, but man did we have some tough ones.”
Central did have a couple of notable victories. Ian Ahlberg won his first singles match, the second set 8-6 in a tiebreaker. The third flight doubles team of Henry Fouberg and Brett Jacobs won their first match, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
“They were down in both of those sets and had to come back to win both of them,” Kurtz said. “That’s a sign of maturity. That’s Henry being a senior and kind of really leading the way, and Brett played pretty well, also.”
O’Gorman and Sioux Falls Lincoln are tied for first in team points. Central is seventh, within striking distance of Brandon Valley and Harrisburg.
“There’s a lot of points out there. That hasn’t been our number one focus,” Kurtz said. “Our number one goal is to get people on the podium. We have a chance at very flight. You have to win two matches to get fifth place and get up on the podium. That would be a great accomplishment for all these guys.”
