SIOUX FALLS – Area athletes had a memorable weekend, including setting new school records, at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls this past weekend.

Bennett Schwenn of Milbank Area won the triple jump and ran a leg on the winning sprint medley relay, while Emily Breske of Dakota Hills won the high jump.

Other top individual finishes included Sam Rohlfs of Aberdeen Central who was second in the long jump, fourth in the triple jump and seventh in the 100-meter dash, while Zander Widener of Langford Area was fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles, Gracelyn Leiseth of Hamlin was third in the shot put with teammate Kami Wadsworth fifth, McKenna Prouty of Hamlin was fourth in the high jump, Milbank Area’s Greta Snaza was fourth in the pole vault, Kade Larson of Langford Area was seventh in the triple jump, Ryker Trevett of Milbank Area was seventh in the shot put, Ashlynn Batchelor of Milbank Area was seventh in the 3,200, Jacob Merxbauer of Central was eighth in the triple jump, and North Central’s Alec Maier was eighth in the 400.

Ipswich broke a pair of school records in Class B boys’ relay events. The Tigers set marks in both the 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay with the same foursome of Dylan Owens, Carson Gohl, Matthew Hettich and Ty Kadlec.

“They ran really well today,” said Ipswich coach Todd Thorson. “I was a little worried coming into the weekend, because we would normally run with fresh legs. But with the weather and season we had to run fairly hard last Saturday and Tuesday, then this weekend. Great efforts across the board for us.”

The 400-meter relay team finished third and recorded a time of :44.78. The 800-meter relay team was second in a clocking of 1:32.65. Both of the previous school records of :44.9 in the 400 and 1:33 in the 800 were set in 2007.

“Nine out of 10 relays ran their fastest times of the year,” Thorson said of his runners on the weekend, “and the 10th relay team wasn’t the same group that ran last week.”

Other relay results (all run in three different classes) included the Aberdeen Central girls taking second in the medley and seventh in the 1600, Northwestern girls taking third in the 400-meter relay and fourth in the 800-meter relay, the Northwestern boys finishing third in the 3,200-meter relay, the North Central boys taking third in the 1,600-meter relay, the Milbank Area boys finishing third in the 1,600-meter relay and sixth in the 400-meter relay, the Ipswich girls taking fifth in the medley and seventh in the 1,600-meter relay, the Milbank Area girls taking fifth in the 3,200-meter relay and seventh in the 800-meter relay, the Mobridge-Pollock boys placing fifth in the 3,200-meter relay, the Langford Area boys taking sixth in the medley, the Warner boys finishing sixth in the 1,600-meter relay and seventh in the 400-meter relay, the Faulkton boys finishing seventh in the 3,200, the Ipswich boys taking seventh in the medley, the Central boys taking eighth in the 3,200, and the Herreid-Selby Area girls placing eighth in the 400.
