Athletes take advantage of ideal conditions at LRC meet

The sun was shining, the stars were out and the records were falling during the Lake Region Conference track and field meet Tuesday in Ipswich.

A variety of top athletes took advantage of near perfect conditions to set new meet, school or personal records during the event. A total of nine meet records were broken and another one was tied.

Ipswich swept the team titles, winning the boys’ division with 175 points. Warner was second with 153. In the girls’ division, Ipswich finished with 219.5 points. Warner was runner-up with 94.5.

It was day that saw some memorable performances. Cody Larson of Warner broke an LRC meet record dating back to 1969 in the 1,600-meter run. His winning time of 4:26.14 broke the former record of 4:30.7 set by Loren Kambestad.

“I looked at it this morning and I said, well let’s try for it,” Larson said of the record. “It’s a huge honor. I’m happy I got a good day to run it. Normally, it’s so windy when we come here. This is the best day of conference I’ve had my whole career.”

Larson went on to add a win in the 3,200-meter run in record-setting fashion and finished second in the 800-meter run. He also ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay squad.

When asked what his favorite event was, the senior had a hard time deciding.

“I don’t know. It’s close,” he said. “I like the 4X4 just because it’s a relay team, but the mile is up there. It’s right up there with that 4X4, back and forth.”

Isaac Sumption of Frederick was another individual who had a monster day, winning the 100 and 200, running a leg on the winning 800-meter relay team and running on a second place 400-meter team.

Like Larson, Sumption enjoys competing with his teammates.

“Open is fun and all, but in relays you’re more accountable for your teammates,” Sumption said, “so you have more at stake than rather just only hurting yourself.”

Sumption said competing in a meet with so many quality athletes brings out the best in everyone.

“It’s fun having competition and people to push you,” he said. “That brings out the best in you. It’s fun having other talented kids around you.”

Peyton Melius of Faulkton won the high jump with season best leap of 5-feet 2-inches.

“I’ve been working towards that all year,” said Melius. She said the conditions helped. “I think three times this year I’ve jumped in the rain, so it’s probably one of the best days we’ve had all year for jumping.”

The senior, who also ran on three relays, also enjoys competing with her teammates.

“I just think relays, personally, they’re my favorite just because it’s a team effort,” Melius said. “You can’t have one good leg that will carry you on. Individual is a more of a head game for me. I like relays because you get to be with your friends.”

In one of the closest relays on the day, Rachel Beaner of Aberdeen Christian brought her team from behind as the Knights won the 3,200-meter relay in dramatic fashion by 6/100th of a second. The sophomore caught a runner from Faulkton with about 200 meters left.

“I was just trying to run my race, close the gap and just trying to catch her, but I didn’t know if I would,” Beaner said. “I could tell she was tiring out and so I just passed her then. I didn’t know if I could keep her behind me or not.”

Beaner, who later in the meet broke her own school record in the 800, she said also likes competing in relays over individual events.

“I try to run faster in the relay, because I’m doing it for my team,” Beaner said. “The open 8 is just by myself.”

Everywhere there were notable performances.

Alec Maier won the 400 and 800, clocking the state’s fastest Class B time in the 800 this season at 1:59.38, also breaking a meet record belonging to Kambestad set in 1969.

Zander Widener of Langford Area won both hurdles races, setting a new meet record in both, and also ran on the winning 400-meter relay squad which set a meet record and the second place 800-meter relay. Teammate Kade Larson won the long jump and triple jump, and also ran on the 400 relay team.

Warner’s Jackson McNeil won the shot put and discus.

In the girls’ division, Jessica Boekelheide won the 100 and 200, and also ran on the winning 400-meter relay team. The Wildcats had three relays that broke meet records.

North Central’s Krystal Geier won the long jump and triple jump, and Katelyn Geditz of Ipswich won the shot put and discus.

Aberdeen Christian found the winner’s circle in a few events. In addition to the 3,200-meter relay team (which included Kathryn Steger, Grace Steger, Hailey Moeller and Beaner), Moeller set a new school record in winning the 3,200-meter run in a time of 12:37.53, and Andrew Brennan won the pole vault in a new school mark of 9-feet 3-inches.

“I thought it was a good day of competition,” said Christian coach David Rohrbach. “Shawnteah LaCroix was second in the 200. As a seventh-grader she has a lot of potential.”

Rohrbach also noted a couple of performances in the boys’ division.

“I thought our boys relays were solid as well, placing in the top four in the 4X1 and 4X2,” he said. “Ben Rohl has been consistent placing all year in the 100.”

The Knights will compete in the Region 1B meet a week from Thursday in Britton.
