WATERTOWN – Aberdeen Central wrapped up its regular season with a pair of tennis victories on Thursday. The Golden Eagles edged Watertown 4-3 and blanked Madison 9-0.

“Overall, a good day for us,” said Central coach Trent Kurtz.

The Golden Eagles dominated the top flights against Watertown, but dropped matches at the bottom.

“They’re really good at 5 and 6,” Kurtz said. ” I thought Brett (Jacobs) and Henry (Fouberg) both played more competitive today than they did the first time they played them. That’s definitely the strength of their team.”

The Eagles were coming off a long day of tennis at the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament on Tuesday. Kurtz felt his squad handled it better than they did a long day of tennis last weekend in Brookings.

“I think that’s been good for us the last week. I didn’t think we handle a long day very well Saturday at the Brookings Quad, but I then thought we were much better at ESD,” Kurtz said. “We got better as the day kind of went on.”

Those long days should help prepare the Eagles for next week’s Class AA State Tournament in Sioux Falls.

“I think we’ll be ready. It will be our first look at a two-day state tournament.,” Kurtz said. “We need to be ready for it, but I think we are now, better than we were a week ago.”
