Knights qualify two for state

WATERTOWN – Aberdeen Christian was unable to qualify its boys’ team for the state golf meet, but the Knights are taking their top two golfers to state.

Jett Becker finished fourth at the Region 1B tournament Monday with an 83, while Zeke Becker was eighth with an 87.

The Knights were second in team points at the pre-region meet last week, but could not replicate that feat this week. However, both Beckers are headed to the biggest meet of the season.

“What we expected and obviously hoped for at the start of the year,” said Christian coach David Rohrbach. “Last week’s pre-region gave us a little bit of hope that maybe we’d sneak our team in, but obviously we knew we’d have to golf really well. It’s really good to get those two going.”

Sam Hansen of Great Plains Lutheran shot a 74 to earn medalist honors and help GPL to the team title as well. Hamlin was runner-up.

“There were some high scores. Sam Hansen shot really well, but I thought outside of him there were some fairly high scores than what you normally see out of some really good golfers in that region,” Rohrbach said. “Still a really good field. A lot of guys that could make some noise at state for sure. A lot of these guys in our region that were at the top have been pretty decent all year long. They’ve been to a lot of state meets and now they’re upperclassmen. It’s definitely a really good region for golf and I hope that they have a good showing.”

Castlewood won the girls’ team crown. Hamlin, behind medalist Taylor Koisti, was second.

The Beckers will now have two weeks to prepare for the upcoming state tourney June 7-8 in Brookings.

“Zeke has put together a couple of pretty consistent rounds. He had 87 both last week and this week. Zeke is playing pretty well,” Rohrbach said. “Jett would like to be a little lower. Jett hasn’t played his best yet this year. Hopefully, he can put together a really good round at state.”

Rohrbach believes that both golfers have a solid chance to play at state.

“They’ve placed at some meets where there’s some really good golfers,” Rohrbach said. “If they can be consistent and just find a way to trim down a few shots, I think they could have a chance to be really competitive.”
