MILBANK – Sisseton, powered by the medalist play of Kelsey Heath, won the Northeast Conference girls’ golf championship Monday at the Whetstone Creek Golf Course. The Redmen had a score of 368.

Aberdeen Roncalli, which was the only other team to have four girls in the top 13, finished second in team points at 415. The Cavaliers were led by Margaret Anderson who was seventh and Claire Crawford who was eighth. Ava Danielson finished 11th and Morgan Helms 13th.

“Claire and Margaret obviously always play pretty steady. They’re never up; they’re never down,” said Roncalli coach Kerry Brandenburger. “I was pretty happy with Morgan and Ava. Those two continue to drop their scores. I’m very happy with that.”

Carly Guthmiller of Groton finished runner-up, while Marion Mischel of Mibank Area was third.

Brandenburger said it helped that her players were able to play the same course less than a week ago.

“It helped playing it so recently. I think the girls knew where the trouble was,” Brandenburger said.

The coach said make no mistake, there is plenty of trouble lurking on the Whetstone course.

“It is a big course and there’s a lot of trouble on it,” she said. “It has everything from trees, sand, water, out of bounds, it’s got it all.”

The Cavaliers will head to Sisseton on Thursday in preparation for next week’s region meet also at Sisseton.

“The goal always is to make it to the state golf tournament,” Brandenburger said. “As their coach that’s my job to make sure they’re ready for that big region tournament.”

Right now, the Cavaliers are headed in the right direction.

“They’re just playing so well,” Brandenburger said. “I’m just so happy about that.”

Team Points: Sisseton 368, Aberdeen Roncalli 415, Redfield 434, Milbank Area 436. Incomplete: Groton.
