SISSETON – Sisseton used a little home-course advantage on the way to winning its own girls’ golf invitational on Thursday. Led by medalist Kelsey Heath, the Redmen had three of the top four individual finishers.

Aberdeen Roncalli struggled a bit and finished seventh in team points.

“I think Sisseton is one of the toughest 9-hole golf courses around that we will ever see. I saw a lot golfers out there who really struggled,” said Roncalli coach Kerry Brandenburger. “It’s a mentally tough course so my young golfers learned a lot about mental toughness today.”

The Cavaliers were led by Claire Crawford who finished 14th with a 109.

Roncalli will be right back on the same course again on Monday for the Region 1A tournament. Brandenburger said that was one of the advantages of seeing the course on Thursday.

“My main goal as their coach was to try to use today as a “practice round” for the region tournament next week. I just wanted the kids to fee a little bit more comfortable with the actual course next week,” she said. “That course has everything: a lot of trees and some sand and some water and out of bounce. Very tricky place to play. The course is set in the side of of a big hill so it tends to play tricks on the eyes.”

Brandenburger targeted a few areas where the Cavaliers could lower some of their scores next week.

“Some of improvement definitely could be in the girls’ short game, pitching and definitely putting,” Brandenburger said. “That is where we can drop some scores a little bit.”
