MITCHELL – The fourth and fifth innings doomed the Aberdeen Smittys in a pair of American Legion baseball losses on Friday. The Smittys gave up three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth in both contests, losing to Mitchell 8-1 and Yankton 6-3.

Aberdeen trailed 3-1 against Mitchell before the hosts broke the game open with those five runs in the fourth and fifth. Seth Muth and Jonah Schmidt each drove in runs in the fourth and finished with two hits in the contest. Carson Fahey also had a pair of hits.

Meanwhile, Landon Waddell struck out seven batters in going the distance for Mitchell, allowing four singles, one each to Nick Clemens, Tyler Hoffman, Brock Martin and Brian Holmstrom.

The Smittys and Yankton were tied at 1-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth before Yankton scored three times in the third and twice in the fourth. Joe Gokie, who had two hits and knocked in three, delivered a two-run single in the fourth. A total of seven different Yankton players had hits in the game. Yankton also took advantage of seven walks.

Drew Ryken went the distance on the mound, striking out seven and did not allow a walk.

Clemens had two hits, including a double, and drove in a pair for the Smittys. Aiden McCafferty also had two hits, including a double.
