The Aberdeen Smittys used a late surge to win one game and turned back a late rally to secure another in a doubleheader sweep over Brookings in American Legion baseball Thursday at Fossum Field. The Smittys won by scores of 8-5 and 11-10.
The opener was tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning before Tyler Hoffman delivered a two-run double to put the Smittys in control.
Matt Feiock had two hits, including a double for the Smittys, who scored five times in the bottom of the first. Max Prehn and Aiden McCafferty each scored twice in the contest.
Three Aberdeen pitchers combined to allow just one hit. However, Brookings took advantage of eight walks and three Aberdeen errors to plate five runs.
The Smittys built an 11-4 lead in the nightcap and then held on as Brookings scored six times over the last two innings.
Max Prehn had a two-run single in the second inning as the Smittys wiped out a 1-0 deficit. The hosts then scored six times in the fourth to erase a 4-3 deficit. Prehn, Hoffman, Nick Clemens, Feiock, Brian Holmstrom and Austin Wagemann each drove in runs during the uprising.
Aberdeen tacked on two more runs in the fifth and then held on from there.
Prehn, Clemens, Josh Steinwandt and Wagemann each finished with two hits for the Smittys. Prehn knocked in three runs.
