Central split final duals in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central split a pair of duals on the second day of playing five Sioux Falls high schools this past weekend.

The Golden Eagles rolled past Sioux Falls Roosevelt 9-0 before coming up short against Sioux Falls Lincoln 6-3.

Central had its chances against Lincoln, but lost a pair of super-tiebreakers.

“We were two tiebreaks away from beating them,” said Central coach John Vogel. “They were close tiebreaks at that.”

Vogel noted that his players had match points in both of those battles, but could not quite finish the task, falling in one super 10-7 and in another 12-10.

Still, he was pleased with how hard the Eagles pushed the five-time defending state champs.

“When I first got involved in the program six years ago, we were happy just to get a game off them,” Vogel said. “I told the girls, I think next year let’s go beat them. We almost did it today. The girls played great and that’s fantastic.”

Central was able to win one nail-biter on the day when Laney Gonsor defeated her Lincoln opponent, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at number five singles.

Gonsor was not the only player to win both of her singles. Alice Vogel also did not drop a set in her two victories at number four singles.

The number three doubles tandem of Gonsor and Charlee Galvin continues to perform well, winning both of their matches in straight sets.

The Eagles finished 3-2 on the weekend with wins over Washington, Jefferson and Roosevelt.

“We’re pleased with how it all turned out,” Vogel said. “The girls are rising to the occasion. It was a great weekend.”

Central competes in the Brookings Quadrangular on Friday and the Brookings Jamboree on Saturday.
