Eagles win pair of tennis duals

RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central weathered — pun intended — a two-hour rain delay and a venue change to close out a 7-2 tennis win over St. Thomas More Saturday afternoon in Rapid City. That, combined with a 9-0 victory over Rapid City Central earlier in the day, puts the Golden Eagles at 3-1 in duals after the first two days of the 2021 season.

Central coach John Vogel said he was a bit nervous about the change in playing venue. Several of his players had momentum in their matches and had already handled the change in conditions as the front moved through. Now with the rain moving in, the Golden Eagles were essentially moving to enemy territory.

“St. Thomas More practices on those indoor courts,” Vogel said.

But no matter. The Golden Eagles handled that, too.

“I was really pleased that we were able to stay focused and able to play almost even better than before,” Vogel said.

Focused, in fact, was a word Vogel would have used to describe his team throughout the day. Not only did the Golden Eagles have to fight for points against a much improved St. Thomas More squad, they were also sharp in the earlier win over Rapid City Central.

“Our girls were tired, but they held on,” Vogel said. “It was 9-0 and the scores weren’t close, but they worked for that, too. They could have easily played the lazy card and lost the first set, but they didn’t.”

After covering the west edge of the state, the Golden Eagles will now head to Sioux Falls this coming weekend to do battle with five of the six Sioux Falls squads. Central will play Washington, O’Gorman and Jefferson on Friday, and Lincoln and Roosevelt Saturday.
