SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Central won two of its three tennis duals Friday, taking down Sioux Falls Washington and Sioux Falls Jefferson and falling to O’Gorman.
The Golden Eagles started out with a 6-0 win over Washington. The doubles were rained out. O’Gorman doubled up Central 6-3, before the Eagles edged Jefferson 5-4.
“We were pleased,” said Central coach John Vogel. “I was very impressed with what the girls did.”
There were several highlights on the day, including a pair of doubles victories over O’Gorman.
Carly Comstock and Grace Douglas scored a straight set win at number two doubles.
Laney Gonsor and Charlee Galvin rallied for a super-tiebreak win at number three doubles. The duo dropped the first set, won the second and then dominated the super breaker.
“They had one game where they missed four easy volleys,” Vogel said. “I briefly talked to them. I just said, ‘Don’t worry about that. That’s exactly what we want. You’re not going to miss the next one.’ I don’t think they missed a volley the rest of the night. They played great.”
Another notable match was Emily Ringgenberg’s victory over O’Gorman’s Maya Jamous, an opponent she lost to last year in a breaker. Ringgenberg was down 1-4 in the first set before winning 12 of the last 13 games.
“How about Emily Ringgenberg right there?” Vogel said. “She needed a confidence booster. That was a fanatistic win for Emily.”
Central is back in action again today taking on Sioux Falls Roosevelt before facing five-time defending state champion Sioux Falls Lincoln.
