SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Roncalli lost to Yankton 8-1 and defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt 6-3 in tennis action on Saturday.

The Cavaliers claimed wins in the top four singles spots against Roosevelt, with Hallie Haskell, Maria Barnett, River Haskell and Raley Haskell each defeating their opponent.

“Our top four are very special leaders and players, and it’s been exciting to watch them grow even in just this season,” said Roncalli coach Hallie Rohrbach. “Hallie served well today with a few aces, hit the shots she wanted and had no shortage of winners. River was down 1-4 and battled back for a 10-4 win.”

Rohrbach pointed out the leadership of Hallie Haskell, the lone senior on the squad.

“One thing I admire most about her is she gives it her all to the very last point of the very last game in all of her matches,” Rohrbach said. “That work ethic is something you can’t teach a player. They have it or they don’t, and it’s something that makes them so special and incredibly fun to coach.”

Eva Madsen filled in for Katherine Kretchman at number five singles and held her own.

“Eva Madsen filled in and did a great job finishing 8-10 against a AA school in her first year on varsity,” Rohrbach said.

The Cavaliers are home on Monday against St. Thomas More, before hosting Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens on Friday and competing in the Elliott Extravaganza on Saturday.

“We have a full week of matches,” Rohrbach said, “and are excited to see how our strong leaders show, and how the rest of our team continues to grow on the road to state.”
