YANKTON – A pair of Class AA boys’ soccer heavyweights squared off on Saturday and fourth-rated Yankton came away with a 2-0 win over second-rated Aberdeen Central in Eastern South Dakota Conference action.

The contest marked the first time this season that the Golden Eagles have been held without a goal.

“We played a good Yankton team who defended really well,” said Central coach Lance Mohr.

The Eagles had some chances but came away empty and trailed 1-0 at the half.

“We created quite a few good chances in the first half and weren’t able to capitalize,” Mohr said. “At that same time, we gave them a goal which really boosted their confidence.”

The Bucks then tacked on another goal just two minutes into the second half to give themselves a little breathing room. That proved to be enough as Yankton improved to 9-1-1 on the season with its sixth straight shutout.

“Their goalkeeper had some great saves to keep us out in the first and second half,” Mohr said.

The setback was only the second on the season for Central and snapped a seven-game winning streak.

The Eagles, 9-2 on the year, close out their regular season by hosting Mitchell at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Swisher Field.
