Aberdeen Central blanked Rapid City Central 9-0 and fell to Rapid City Stevens 8-1 in tennis action at the Holgate Courts on Friday.

The highlight of the day came in the first flight doubles match against Stevens where Emily Rinngenberg and Alice Vogel won a marathon match.

The Golden Eagles top doubles squad defeated its opponent 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 15-13.

“That was a huge win for them,” said Aberdeen Central coach John Vogel. “They played great at the start of the match, then had a lull, but at 1-4 in the second they turned it on to comeback and get the set in a breaker. In the super breaker it took six match points to get the win, 15-13.”

What made the match even more special is that there was a large gallery to witness it.

“It was a wonderful atmosphere for it,” Coach Vogel said. “Both full teams and all fans were on the edge the whole time.”

The Eagles came up short in another tight match at fifth flight singles where Laney Gonsor fell in a second set tie-breaker.

Rapid City Stevens improved to 18-0 in duals this season.

The hosts did not drop a set against Rapid City Central.

Coach Vogel pointed out the play of Ringgenberg against her opponent.

“A month ago, those two had a much closer match,” he noted.

The Eagles host the Elliott Extravaganza today.

“Overall, Stevens looked tough. They are definitely one of the top teams in the state,” Coach Vogel said. “I was plesed with the girls’ effort. Hopefully, it continues when we host Pierre at 9 a.m., and Roncalli around 4.”
