WATERTOWN – Aberdeen Roncalli concluded its regular season with an 8-1 setback to Watertown in tennis action on Thursday.
The dual was much closer than the score indicated as the Cavaliers lost two super-tiebreakers in singles and also a close match in doubles.
Roncalli’s lone win came at top flight doubles where Hallie Haskell and Maria Barnett teamed up for a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
“Our number one doubles played really well and pulled out the win,” said Roncalli coach Hallie Rohrbach. “They played aggressive and consistent, and pulled out the win in two sets.”
Both Haskell and Barnett dropped heartbreakers in singles, falling in super-tiebreakers, both by scores of 10-2.
Haskell won her first set, while Barnett won her second set.
“Hallie came out strong in her singles match and stayed ahead the whole first set winning 6-4,” Rohrbach said. “She got down in the second set and couldn’t recover the lead and unfortunately some solid play from Watertown combined with a small struggle with Hallie’s serve and she lost the tiebreaker.”
Barnett was able to bounce back from a first-set loss, but couldn’t quite get over the hump in her match.
“Maria had an awesome comeback after losing her first set pretty handily. She came back and won the second set 6-3 and also lost in the tiebreaker,” Rohrbach said. “I was proud of our girls for playing hard until the end.”
The Cavaliers were also in a tight match at flight two doubles where they fell 6-3, 7-5.
Roncalli is now off until playing in the State A tournament in October in Sioux Falls.
