MADISON – Aberdeen Roncalli placed four golfers in the top 18 and captured its sixth consecutive Region 1A team championship on Monday. The Cavaliers finished with a team total of 353, seven strokes better than Sioux Valley.
“We’re lucky with that tradition at Roncalli,” said Cavaliers coach Jon Murdy. “We have a lot of kids and a lot of families that have that rich history for Roncalli golf.”
Caleb Barse of Tiospa Zina was the medalist with a 76. Mason Carrels of Roncalli was second with a 78.
Other Roncalli golfers in the top 20 included Sawyer Henrich who was fifth with an 84, Finn Anderson who was 17th with a 95, and Andrew Gerlach who was 18th with a 96.
Murdy said the daily competition in practice has paid off in tournaments this season.
“The best thing I think that’s happened this year is the battle between Mason and Sawyer at the number one spot. It’s helped push Mason a little bit more. It’s helped Sawyer,” Murdy said. “It’s helped that in-house play for that first and second spot so that when we go to tournaments they don’t just necessarily want to beat the other teams and come in first or second, they don’t want to lose the spot to their teammate. So it helps out a lot.”
The Cavaliers will compete in the Class A State Tournament on the same course next Monday and Tuesday in Madison.
Murdy said his squad plans to be in contention for a state title. He said there is about a half dozen teams that will be in the mix.
Roncalli should enter the tourney with a lot of confidence despite being a young squad.
It has already been a memorable season for the Cavaliers.
When asked what he would have said had someone told him his young squad would win the region this season, Murdy responded, “I would have said what’s going on here, because there’s no chance, having a seventh-grader, eight-grader, sophomore, junior and a senior. Wanting to compete and competing are two different things. I wanted to compete, because that’s just kind of the way that I am and I know the kids wanted to compete. They just went out and they did it. It’s been great to watch that with such a young group of kids.”
