MADISON – Mason Carrels of Aberdeen Roncalli finished second at the Class A State Golf Tournament while the Cavaliers were fourth as a team on Tuesday.
Carrels had a two-day total of 157, two shots behind Kaleb Jost of Sioux Falls Christian.
Jost made up four shots over the last few holes to pull out the victory.
Roncalli finished with a team score of 687. Tea Area won the team championship with a score of 669.
“We had three kids in the top 25. Mason getting second, the team getting fourth,” said Roncalli coach Jon Murdy. “If you would have told me that at the beginning of the season, we wouldn’t have even needed to play it. We would have said, ‘OK, We’ll take it.’ “
Carrels becomes the third Roncalli male golfer to finish runner-up in the past 15 years. Ben Heller was second in both 2007 and 2008, while Gabe Heller was second in 2014. Roncalli has also had four state champions during that span: Michael Duch in 2013, Gabe Heller in 2015, Lucas Schaefebauer in 2017, and Micah Dohrer in 2020.
Murdy said Carrels had a huge impact on the program, especially mentoring the younger players this season.
“He was there to push them in the ways that a senior in high school should,” Murdy said. “It’s going to be hard to replace Mason Carrels. I don’t know if technically we will be able to. We’ll try to recreate him the best we can with someone else.”
Finn Anderson finished 21st with a 171, one stroke ahead of teammate Sawyer Henrich who was 22nd.
Murdy said that while the players “didn’t have their best stuff” on Tuesday, they still had an outstanding season, which included conference and region titles.
“It was a good all-around team effort all year long for us,” Murdy said.
Other Northeast Conference golfers in the top 25 included Caleb Barse of Tiospa Zina at 13th with a 167, Brevin Fliehs of Groton who was tied for 19th at 170, and Riley Steen of Sisseton who was 25th with a 177.
