SIOUX FALLS – A variety of Aberdeen Central players found their way to the podium during the final day of the Class AA State Tennis Tournament on Friday.
The Golden Eagles finished sixth in team points with 215.5. Rapid City Stevens won the state championship title.
Emily Ringgenberg at flight one singles, Alice Vogel at flight four singles and Laney Gonsor at flight five singles, all lost their semifinal matches and ended up taking fourth. Carly Comstock at flight two singles and Avery Tennant at flight six singles each finished sixth.
“It was a rough morning in singles,” said Central coach John Vogel. “Emily struggled against eventual champ Avery Summers (of Sioux Falls Jefferson), Alice fell down 1-6, 1-4 before she woke up, getting to a tiebreaker in the second. Laney played fine, but ran into solid players. Carly and Avery won their first match, but came in sixth.”
Comstock and Livia Douglas had turned in the match of the day, rallying for a 10-9 victory to earn fifth place at flight two doubles.
“In doubles, the highlight was 2s coming back from 4-8 down against OG to earn fifth place and a spot on the podium,” Vogel said. “1s had two matchpoints, but lost in a breaker to Watertown, 3s also lost to Watertown finishing in 6th place.”
It proved to be a tourney of a lot of close matches for the Golden Eagles.
“Instead of dwelling on the near misses over the past couple of days, we’re focusing on how we improved from our eighth finish from last year,” Vogel said, “and looking forward to bringing everyone back and improving even more next year.”
