The Aberdeen Cougars wrapped up an impressive three-game weekend with another lopsided girls’ hockey victory on Sunday.

The Cougars defeated Sioux Center 7-1 at the Odde Ice Center to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Kailyn Poppen, who had a hat trick against Huron on Friday, added another one in Sunday’s triumph. Poppen also assisted on two goals.

The Cougars, who also defeated Sioux Center on Saturday, have now outscored their opponents 22-2 to start the season.

“I think the girls are working on buying into some of the concepts we are stressing to them,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister. “They are skating hard and putting forth great effort each game.”

Sunday’s rematch with Sioux Center was tight through two periods as the Cougars led just 2-1 before exploding for five goals in the third period.

Weinmeister said the plan is for the Cougars to take advantage of their depth to outskate opponents in the final period.

“One of the things we hope to do is wear them down, especially after three games in three days,” Weinmeister said. “We try to keep shifts short with high energy.”

Aberdeen peppered the Sioux Center goal with 53 shots on Sunday. Morgan Jones, Lauren Scheel, Ema Rehder and Aiden Raap each scored once in the victory.

The Cougars host Brookings on Saturday before traveling to Watertown on Sunday.
