Wolves split NSIC openers with Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Northern State women won, while the men came up short in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball openers Tuesday night against Minnesota State, Moorhead.

The NSU women pulled away from a three-point halftime lead to cruise to a 66-48 victory over the Dragons. The Wolves managed just nine points in the second quarter, but got the offense going in the final 20 minutes.

Lexi Roe lead a balanced attack for Northern with 15 points. Haley Johnson followed with 13 and Laurie Rogers contibuted 10.

Meanwhile, the Northern men had their rally fall short in a 75-65 setback. The Wolves managed just six points in the first 14 minutes of the game and trailed by as many as 15 points before clawing back into the contest.

Northern cut the deficit down to a single point down the stretch, but was never able to get over the hump.

Jacksen Moni topped the Wolves with 22 points. Kailleb Walton-Blanden added 11.

It will be a big weekend of basketball for the Northern teams this weekend at Wachs Arena during the Dacotah Bank Classic.

Friday’s schedule includes: Michigan Tech vs. MSU, Moorhead women at 2 p.m., Presentation vs. Minnesota-Crookston men at 4 p.m., Northern State vs. MSU Billings women at 6 p.m., and Northern State vs. Midwestern State (Texas), at 8 p.m.

Satuurday’s schedule features: MSU Billings vs. MSU Moorhead women at 1 p.m., Midwestern State (Texas) vs. Minnesota-Crookston men at 3 p.m., Northern State vs. Michigan Tech women at 5 p.m., and Northern State vs. Presentation men at 7 p.m.
