While a weather alert was issued for conditions outside, a Spencer Barr alert should have been issued for his shooting display inside Golden Eagles Arena Friday night.
The junior exploded for 16 points in a six-minute span of the third quarter to help power Aberdeen Central past Spearfish 75-50 in non-conference boys’ basketball. Barr finished the evening with 26 points, including 6-of-6 from three-point range.
“It’s great,” Barr said of being in the shooting zone. “It’s everybody’s dream. It’s been my dream since I was a kid.”
Central had watched the Spartans close the gap to 36-31 midway through the period. The Eagles called a timeout and when play resumed, Barr nailed back-to-back three-pointers to spark a run that left the home team with a 17-point lead by quarter’s end.
“The thing I’ve always loved about these guys is they’ve always responded, whether it’s been just a quick timeout or a big challenge timeout like we did there,” Norberg said. “Sometimes you have to challenge kids and they have to go to another level and a lot of times it just goes on deaf ears or a lot of times they can’t do it. These guys can and they do.”
Barr simply could not miss, hitting from various spots around the three-point arch. If one or two were a heat check, the results would have indicated scorching.
“It was a fun. It was a lot of fun,” said Barr, who thanked his teammates for their support. “I couldn’t’ have done it without them and the coaches.”
The junior has now led the squad in scoring the past two games, connecting for a combined 51 points.
“Spence got it going and then our guys kind of looked for him,” Norberg said. “That was huge. If people could see the time and the effort that he puts in to be a good basketball player; he’s not just lucky. He’s earned every bit of this.”
Barr’s outburst came within the Central offense and featured the Eagles’ unselfish style of play as others found the hot hand. Barr is the only junior starter on the team and Norberg noted that the seniors were willing passers.
“You don’t’ find too many groups where you’re majority seniors and then we’ve got the junior hot and let’s find him, and they did,” Norberg said.

As lethal as Barr’s shooting was, it was Central’s defense that got a bit overshadowed.
The Eagles struggled through a rough start on offense, before the defense got stops which led to the team getting out in transition.
“We started slow, but we picked it up,” Barr said. “We got our transition going, got some easy buckets which created some offense for us.”
Central ended up forcing 21 turnovers in the contest, including five late in the third quarter when the Eagles broke the game open.
“I thought defensively we did a good job,” Norberg said. “They got hot a little bit and we really needed to clamp down until we got it rolling offensively.”
Alec Voegele added 12 points to the Central total, Sam Rohlfs had 10 and AJ Hase eight.
Ryan Heinert topped the Spartans with 18 points, Seth Hamilton followed with 14 and Antonio Serrano netted 10.
