VALLEY CITY, N.D. – It was a bit of a unique day for members of the Aberdeen Central wrestling team. The majority of the boys competed at a tourney in Valley City, the girls wrestled at an event in Ashley, and another member won a title in Rapid City.
Brock Martin won the 132-pound championship during the Lakota Nation Invitational in Rapid City, going 4-0 on the day. The senior just switched weight classes in the past week.
“He was always kind of interested in wrestling in that tournament out there to represent his culture,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “It was good to see him go out there and be successful, open up the scoring a little bit and just have a dominant performance.”
Meanwhile, in Valley City, a trio of Central wrestlers each took third place. That trio was Rayden Zens, Ridley Waldo and Mason Schrempp.
“They all dropped one match, close matches and tough matches,” Bowden said, “but it was good to see them pick themselves back up and get third place.”
Waldo had one of his top performances of the young season so far.
“He wrestled really tough today. He came out and tried some different things offensively,” Bowden said. “He scored a lot of points, put a lot of guys in uncomfortable situations and we were literally seconds away from being in the final.”
Zens and Schrempp continue to have strong seasons for the Golden Eagles.
“They’re leaders for our team and they lead by example,” Bowden said. “They just go out there and find ways to get it done.”
Bowden also pointed out the efforts of Dylan Schaunaman, who lost his first match to a multi-time state champion in the opening round before battling back to grab fifth.
“If you lost at any point the best you could do was come back and get fifth,” Bowden said. “He went 3-1 on the day. He was dominant in those three wins. It was good to see him get some confidence and kind of get to where we want him to be.”
All of the Central girls went 2-2 on the day and got fifth place at the Border Brawl in Ashley, except for Madyson Gillen, who went 3-1 and finished in second place.
Gillen is a leader on the girls’ team.
“She’s the most experienced one out of them,” Bowden said. “She’s been around wrestling her entire life. She’s just a competitor.”
The Eagles wrestled a bit short handed because of illness and injuries.
Central now gets a break for Christmas before returning to action on Dec. 30 in Mitchell. Bowden said the break comes at a good time.
“It’s much needed. Hopefully, we can get through this sickness, just like everyone else is battling and get healthy,” he said, “and get on the other side of Christmas where we get that two-pound growth allowance and life will just be easier.”
