WATERTOWN – Aberdeen Central went 2-2 at the Watertown Dual Wrestling Tournament on Saturday earning a fifth place finish.

The Golden Eagles lost to Harrisburg 54-15, defeated Milbank Area 38-33, lost to Tea Area 43-33 and defeated Canby, Minn. 46-33.

“I saw some good efforts. There’s some technical things that obviously we need to clean up,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “Also, just kind of to see where we’re at with some weights. Some guys we’re going to have to move around a little bit it looks like, some might go up and some might go down, just depending on the situation. Overall, it was a pretty good day. There was lot of good things to build on and there’s a lot of good things in place already.”

As expected, Central did well in the lower weights as Mason Schrempp and Rayden Zens both won four matches on the day, while Tate Huff won three.

“Mason and Rayden and Tate, they were kind of like last year,” Bowden said. “We kind of rely on them to go out there and get points. We kind of rely on them to pick up the slack and get the team going.”

Central also did well in the girls’ portion of the tourney. Bowden said that the Eagles had the majority of the girls there and many ended up wrestling against each other.

The Eagles will now gear up for a big trip out west this coming weekend. Central will wrestle in a pair of duals against Sturgis and Rapid City Central on Thursday in Sturgis before competing in a 47-team two-day tourney in Rapid City.

“This is probably one of my favorite weekends to go on,” Bowden said, noting that the Eagles will get a lot of matches against top-notch competition.

The field will include wrestlers from South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming.

“I would say this is tougher than a state tournament,” Bowden said.
