SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Flyers scored four unanswered goals and remained undefeated with a 4-3 win over the Aberdeen Cougars in boys’ hockey action Sunday.
Aberdeen scored first and last, but was unable to slow down one of the elite teams in the state.
“It was a tough game. Sioux Falls is really skilled and fast,” said Cougars coach Jeremey Backous. “They were able to capitalize early on some of our mistakes and it’s tough to play from behind against a team like theirs.”
Kasen Claymore scored the first goal of the game with 11 seconds left in first period, but the lead lasted all of seven seconds before the Flyers tied the score right before the period ended.
Aberdeen kept battling and eventually closed the gap to 4-2 when Ian Ahlberg scored with 5:19 left. Claymore then cut the deficit to one with his second goal, but there were just seven seconds remaining and Sioux Falls held on for the win.
“The kids continued to compete until the very end and I couldn’t be happier of their effort,” Backous said.
The contest capped a busy weekend of hockey which saw Aberdeen go 2-1 with wins over Watertown on Friday and the other Sioux Falls team on Saturday.
“Three games in three days is tough, especially against a team like Sioux Falls,” Backous said. “We’ll learn from our mistakes and keep working to get better.”
