Aberdeen Central edged a tight pack of teams to grab fifth place at the Hub City Invitational gymnastics meet at Golden Eagles Arena on Saturday.
The Eagles nipped Sioux Falls Roosevelt by less than half a point in the team standings. Mitchell won the team title. Milbank Area was eighth, Britton-Hecla was 11th and Sisseton finished 12th.
“We edged a couple of Sioux Falls teams,” said Central coach Mickey Everson. “Everybody that we were kind of thinking we were going to be neck and neck with we were, but we rose to the top of that little group that we’re all kind of similar, so that was exciting. I’m very happy with the score.”
The Eagles were led by Maggie Fites who took sixth on the bars on the way to a ninth-place finish in the all-around. Ashlyn Beyer was 10th in the vault.
Everson said the squad improved from its first outing of the season.
“From our last meet, we try to improve on all those things the judges say on our score sheets,” Everson said. “I read through those with the girls and I say this is what you’re missing, this is what the judges are looking for and we did that today. I think that is what gave us two more points than we had at the last meet.”
The Hub City Invitational is a huge meet and one that many teams look forward to, according to Everson.
“This is a huge meet. This is bigger than the state meet. This is like the big meet for everyone,” Everson said. “I think a lot of teams look forward to coming here. It’s kind of the big highlight.”

Central will head to Jamestown, N.D. for a unique meet on Tuesday, an event that features squads from three different states.
“It’s a tri-state meet. That’s all different for us, because we compete against a Minnesota team and a North Dakota team,” Everson said. “You just see something different. You don’t see the same people. That’s always a fun meet.”
While the season is only two weeks old, Everson believes her squad is heading in the right direction.
“Our practices are going good and they’re improving on what we need to do,” she said. “I think it’s going great and I think there’s more we can still do.”
