
A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Dec. 12-18:
Last year on Dec. 18, 2020: The Aberdeen Wings defeated St. Cloud 5-0 for their 15th straight win. The Wings got goals from Cade Neilson, Natan Vertes, Clayton Cosentino, Nico deVita and Spencer Schneider. Meanwhile, goalie Jake Sibell saved all 23 shots he faced.
10 years ago on Dec. 12, 2011: ESPN is producing a series highlighting 16 college women’s basketball programs across America and Northern State is one of them. Most of the schools are DI programs, but ESPN wanted to sprinkle in some smaller schools as well and said the popularity of NSU basketball made the Wolves a perfect fit.
20 years ago on Dec. 12, 2001: A trio of players from two-time defending State A champion Sisseton topped the Northeast Conference All-Conference girls’ basketball team. Senior Maggie Ebert, and sophomores Courtney Grimsrud and Ashley Harles headlined the squad. Aberdeen Roncalli seniors Ashley Fettig and Missy Nietert also gained spots on the honor unit. Other players on the team are: senior Lacey Schott of Britton, senior Anna Wegman of Clark, junior Shannon Daly and senior Katie Anderson of Groton, seniors Tondi Jens and Shannon Stormo and junior Ashley Holiday of Hamlin, senior Shannon Job and sophomore Abby Johnson of Milbank, and sophomore Aubrey Baxter of Redfield.
30 years ago on Dec. 13, 1991: Aberdeen Central honored three of its students with MVP awards of their respective teams from the fall season: Rob Walpole for boys’ golf; Jodi Berheim for girls’ cross country; and David Larson for boys’ cross country.
40 years ago on Dec. 12, 1981: In a game that featured several lead changes, Webster clipped Sisseton 59-52 behind 28 points from Lonni Stover. Sisseton got 19 points from Loren Marks.
50 years ago on Dec. 17, 1971: Roncalli senior Tom Schmidt scored a school record 38 points in the Cavaliers 97-57 win over Redfield. Greg Bell had the record of 34 points in a game against Flandreau set in 1969-70.
