Sioux Falls grabs girls’ win over Cougars

SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Flyers did what few teams have accomplished in recent years, they found a way to keep the Aberdeen Cougars off the scoreboard. The Flyers recorded a 5-0 girls’ hockey victory Saturday.

“Sioux Falls played very well and dictated the play of the game,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister. “We were struggling with consistency. We juggled some line combinations around to work on our compete level.”

Weinmeister said he noticed improvement as the contest wore on, but that the team needs to play that way from start to finish.

“I feel we finished good,” he said, “but we need to learn to compete the entire game at that level, especially against solid teams like Sioux Falls.”

Berit Hefti had a pair of goals to lead Sioux Falls, which had 17 more shots on goal than the Cougars. Lilly Moon and Alyssa Lingen each had a goal and an assist.

The Cougars are trying to overcome a few setbacks, which has forced some roster changes.

“We’ve sustained a few injuries and illnesses and have pulled a few girls up from our U14,” Weinmeister said. “They’ve played well, but it’s a big pace change from their normal game level.”

The Cougars will have their third game in three days when they host Huron today at the Odde Ice Center.
