The Aberdeen Cougars received goals from five different players and rolled to a 7-2 girls’ hockey win over the Oahe Capitals at the Odde Ice Center Friday night.

After spotting the visitors an early goal, the Cougars took control with five unanswered scores.

“We saw some good things,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister. “There were times we moved the puck really well. I thought our effort was good. We just need to be quicker with our decision making and strive for consistency throughout the game.”

Madeline Sandvig tied the game before Alyssa Roehrich put the Cougars ahead to stay with a 2-1 first-period lead.

Morgan Jones and Kailyn Poppen each scored in the second period, before Ema Rehder, Jones and Roehrich closed out the scoring in the final period.

Not only did five players score for the Cougars, Aberdeen ended up with assists on six of the goals, including multiple assists on three of those. Poppen finished with three assists and Rehder added two.

“We had a lot of quality scoring opportunities tonight and we had numerous goals where he had multiple assists on the goal,” Weinmeister said. “We were able to move the puck really well. We had a couple of back door goals because of that movement. The lone goal without an assist came from Ema blocking a shot from their point in our defensive end and winning the race to the puck.”

The Cougars had just seven more shots on goal than Oahe, but made the most of their opportunities.
