BISMARCK, N.D. – Aberdeen Central have five wrestlers remaining in consolation round action following the opening day of the Bismarck Rotary Tournament on Friday.
The Golden Eagles, who scored 90 team points, are currently 10th out of 29 teams. Central had a pair of wrestlers, Rayden Zens and Brock Martin, reach the semifinal round before coming up short.
Meanwhile, Ridley Waldo, Tate Huff and Mason Schrempp all bounced back from setbacks and are also still alive when action resumes today.
“We had a good go in the first five weights,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden.
“Ridley, Tate and Mason, all eventually made it through the consolation,” Bowden said. “They all lost in the quarterfinals and then they found their way back through the wrestlebacks.”
Bowden was pleased with how his grapplers competed.
“There were some good individual performances,” he said. “We had some more guys kind of pick up the slack and take a step forward.”
He noted that Waldo is coming back off an illness.
“It was good to seem him get back to his winning ways,” Bowden said. “Tate lost a tight one in the quarters. He was right there to win it. Hopefully, we can advance pretty far with him. Rayden ran into a buzz saw in the (Koye) Grebel kid from Valley City. He’s kind of top of the class up here.”
Schrempp and Martin also faced stiff tests.
“Mason kind of ran into the same thing with the (Logan) Graf kid from Stevens. He’s the number one kid in the state at our weight class,” Bowden said. “It was good to see Brock in the semifinals. We’ll get another shot at (Kaden DeCoteau of Bismarck Century) hopefully at the Lee Wolf.”
The Central girls will be competing when action resumes today.
Bowden said it was good to get back on the mats following last week’s dual win over Mitchell.
“It’s always good to come up here and see this tough competition to kind of see where you’re at after Christmas,” Bowden said. “It was good to get that dual win over Mitchell and then to come up here and see some of our kids keep that momentum rolling, and a couple of other ones see where we need to find some improvement.”
