HARRISBURG – Aberdeen Central won three of four duals and finished third at the Harrisburg Invitational on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles lost their first match of the day 33-30 to Tea Area before rebounding for victories over Sioux Falls Washington 68-9, Dell Rapids 66-9 and O’Gorman 74-4.
“It was great to be on the winning side, get these three good dual wins and having a nice tight one with Tea,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden, “being really competitive going out there and finding a lot of success and just finding ways to win.”
The Eagles had four wrestlers who went undefeated on the day: Mason Schrempp at 126 pounds, Brock Martin at 132, Ayden Gisi at 170 and Jacob Krenz at heavyweight.
Schrempp had a pin and a technical fall among his four wins, while Martin had two pins.
“Mason went out there and kind of did what he’s been doing all season long. He stayed consistent and got back to his offense. He’s just trying to stay dominant,” Bowden said. “The same thing with Brock. It was good to see him to take another step and up his attack rate and score some more points, kind of separate himself from the field a little bit.”
Krenz also recorded a pin on the day.
“Jacob Krenz just keeps improving from week to week,” Bowden said. “He doesn’t’ have a lot of experience, but he does get better week to week.”
Gisi also had a pin and is making major strides, according to Bowden.
“It was great to see him go 4-0 and have the success he did,” Bowden said. “He’s been making subtle improvements from week to week and this week he kind of blew the door off it. He kind of exceeded expectations and is starting to find a little bit more consistency.”
Bowden noted that there are wrestlers who have led the squad from the opening week and they are now being joined by others to feature more of a complete team effort.
“You kind of have your core group of kids that are going out there and finding bonus points consistently and winning you matches, and now we’re getting that supplement,” Bowden said. “Right after Christmas, that’s when you start to see improvement and this week we just took another step up that ladder of improvement.”
Central had five girls compete, led by Katrina Gibson who finished third.
“She’s had a little layoff due to illness and injury,” Bowden said. “It was good to have her back on the mat. She returned to her successful ways.”
The Eagles host Huron in an Eastern South Dakota Conference dual on Thursday at Golden Eagles Arena, before the girls head to Pierre on Saturday while the boys will compete in a tournament in Iowa.
