Aberdeen Central used its pin power early and rolled to a 46-16 wrestling win over Huron Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles recorded pins in the first three weight classes for an 18-0 lead to set the tone for the Eastern South Dakota Conference dual victory at Golden Eagles Arena.
Ridley Waldo at 106 pounds, Tate Huff at 113, and Rayden Zens at 120 all won by fall for Central to start the dual.
“They just got out and do what they do. They’re really good guys to start out the dual with,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “Whenever they come out, they’re just consistently there and they’re going to go out there and look for big points.”
That flurry of pin action helped to motivate Mason Schrempp for his match at 126 pounds.
“It sure does,” Schrempp said. “Watching them go get pins in front of the home crowd is kind of cool to see.”
Schrempp had a unique match. He trailed early, then dominated on the way to a 13-4 lead, spent a brief period on his back, before regaining control in a 16-7 triumph.
“I knew I could get in there and finish my shots on top,” Schrempp said. “I knew I could turn him.”
Schrempp wasn’t the only Central wrestler that rallied for a win. Ryker Meister at 182 also trailed 3-1 before turning the tide and eventually pinning his foe in the third period.
“That’s a big thing that we preach. You have to able to battle through the adversity a little bit,” Bowden said. “You have to stay in the fight and give yourself a chance and that’s what they did. They went back to positioning and they used their positioning to get right back into the match.”
The Eagles also received wins from Logan Opitz at 145, Ayden Gisi at 170, Bryce Beitelspacher at 195, and Samson Flakus at 220.
“I think it was an overall team effort, even in the girls,” Bowden said. “It was good to have the girls dual before us, because they got us going and it kind of woke up the boys and it got the energy in here going.”
Central defeated Huron 30-18 in the girls’ dual led by pins from Eva Hinkle and Madyson Gillen.
Hinkle jumped on her foe early en route to a first-period pin.

“I was a little nervous at the beginning, but I really wanted to get after it,” Hinkle said. “Normally I have a problem with aggression, but I just decided today was the day where I was really going to try to make a shift in my attitude.”
The eighth-grader waited for her opening and then took advantage of it.
“I really think that sort of letting the person come in and then taking advantage of their movements was really helpful for me,” Hinkle said.
The Central boys head to Sioux City, Iowa for a tourney on Saturday, while the Central girls will travel to Pierre for a tournament.
They will head out with some confidence after a convincing win against Huron.
“I thought we wrestled really good,” Schrempp said. “It was as nice team effort; keep it rolling into Saturday.”
