A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 2-8:

Last year on Jan. 2, 2021: Aberdeen Wings head coach Scott Langer became the all-time winning coach in the North American Hockey League’s 46-year history. He earned his 603rd win after his Wings defeated Bismarck 3-1. Langer joined the Wings in 2016 and has since led them to winning the Robertson Cup in 2019.

10 years ago on Jan. 3, 2012: Northern State women’s basketball coach Curt Fredrickson is now 700-249 in 33 seasons with the Wolves. That is the second most wins all-time in NCAA DII women’s basketball. He has coached 293 players, some of whom came from more than 75 different South Dakota towns.

20 years ago on Jan. 9, 2002: After winning the 2001 saddle bronc riding world rodeo title last month in Las Vegas, pro cowboy Tom Reeves is preparing to start his 2002 season and to defend his title. Reeves, 32, said he almost retired after the 2000 season when he finished fourth in the world standings. Reeves has been on the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit since 1982 and the 2001 championship was his first world title.

30 years ago on Jan. 8, 1992: There is an effort underway to grow high school hockey in the state. Currently, only Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Brookings, Huron and Watertown have boys’ teams.

40 years ago on Jan. 3, 1982: The Aberdeen Cougars had 45 shots on goal in its 11-1 hockey win over Brookings. Todd Brummond (five goals, two assists) and Jay Janusz (four goals, four assists) led the Cougars’ offense while goalie Shannon Moran stopped all 20 of Brookings shots except for one.

50 years ago on Jan. 7, 1972: Aberdeen Roncalli ran past Sioux Falls O’Gorman 74-58 by going on an 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter. The winners got 25 points from Tom Schmidt while SFO got 27 points from Dan Wynthein.
