A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 16-22:

Last year on Jan. 16, 2021: The Northern State men’s basketball team won its sixth game in a row to start the season. Parker Fox led the Wolves over Minnesota-Crookston 88-64 with 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, four steals and three blocked shots. Fox also had five dunks in the game. NSU also got great contributions from Mason Stark (21 points), Tommy Chatman (12 points) and Jordan Belka (10 points, three rebounds and three assists).

10 years ago on Jan. 16, 2012: Jill Young scored seven straight points in the closing minutes to help South Dakota State hold off South Dakota 59-51 in women’s basketball. SDSU leads the all-time series 48-21 and has won the last five meetings and 29 of the last 31. Young led the Jacks with 11 points as SDSU had seven players with five or more points. Amber Hegge led USD with 20 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

20 years ago on Jan. 19, 2002: With wins over Rapid City Stevens and Spearfish, coach Greg Murley and his Aberden Central volleyball team improved to 21-1. Leading the wins were Chelsey Deibert, Laura Legge, Angie Hayes and Terri
LaFontaine.

30 years ago on Jan. 18, 1992: Gideon Saul and Bryant Ross combined for 46 points to lead Crow Creek past Marty 88-66 to win the Hyde County Action Club Tournament in Highmore. Glenn Drapeau scored 43 for Marty. Eric Lappe scored 33 points as Harrold defeated Lower Brule 98-76 for third place.

40 years ago on Jan. 16, 1982: Rick Erickson had 27 points and 16 rebounds to lead Bristol over Langford 59-56. Langford got 23 points from Troy Haaland.

50 years ago on Jan. 22, 1972: After a week of impressive wins over Huron and Vermillion, Miller is the No. 1 rated Class A team in the state. The Rustlers are led by Rick Nissen and Kim Templeton and are coached by Cresbard and Northern State graduate Bob Dockter.
