
A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 5:
Last year on Feb. 1, 2021: The South Dakota High School Activities Association board of directors approved a proposed on-time start for all spring sports. The proposal, which was drafted by the SDHSAA COVID-19 task force, includes sport-specific rule modifications, guiding principles and recommendations in dealing with the pandemic.
10 years ago on Jan. 31, 2012: There were five steals in 12 seconds in the Miller-Aberdeen Roncalli girls’ basketball game. The series of quick exchanges ended in a layup by Tara Parmely of Miller.
20 years ago on Jan. 31, 2002: With the game tied at 43 early in the fourth quarter, Timber Lake closed with a 22-6 scoring run to top Tiospaye Topa in the first round of the Little Moreau Conference Tournament. The winners got 17 points and 14 rebounds from Kurt Aberle while Brent Gill and Jason Lawrence combined for 24 points. Timber Lake sophomore and future South Dakota all-star sports journalist Ryan Deal scored two points.
30 years ago on Feb. 2, 1992: Kent Alm of Aberdeen won the Harr Motors Invitational Racquetball Tournament in Aberdeen. He defeated his doubles partner, Rick Malsam of Aberdeen. The duo won the doubles’ title as well.
40 years ago on Feb. 4, 1982: Edgeley hosted seven wrestling matches on a Thursday night as the home team defeated Ellendale 36-34, but lost to Oakes 40-25. Ellendale defeated Oakes 30-28, Ashley 42-22 and Wishek 36-29. Oakes also defeated Ashley 52-13 and Wishek 39-15. Ellendale got four wins from its 112-pounder Norm Hagen as well as from Mark Boniek at 126 pounds.
50 years ago on Feb. 3, 1972: The South Dakota School for the Visually Handicapped is preparing for the upcoming regional wrestling tournament in Ipswich. The Pioneers of Aberdeen will be led by Rich Landeau (7-0-2 at 126 pounds); Rodney Harms (9-0-0 at 185 pounds); and Leighton Meyers (8-0-1 at heavyweight).
