WEBSTER – A team known for its defense was pretty efficient on offense Thursday night.

Aberdeen Roncalli made nine three-point field goals, played its usual stellar defense and collected a 63-25 Northeast Conference girls’ basketball win over Webster. The top-rated Cavaliers are 9-0 on the season.

Roncalli’s defense was up to its usual performance, allowing just nine total field goals.

The Cavaliers bolted out to 21-4 lead in the opening period with the offense in high gear.

“I thought we did a good job defensively, especially the first quarter for sure which kind of then led to some offense. We got out in transition a little bit,” said Roncalli coach Derek Larson. “We shot the ball better than we have all year tonight, also. Shots started to fall and we kind of all gained a little confidence. It seemed like once we saw the first one go in, everyone gained a little momentum, a little confidence in ourselves.”

That led to some proficient shooting from the perimeter.

“We had nine threes,” Larson said. “I don’t know if we’ve hit nine threes in the last three games combined.”

Larson said the looks were not forced at all.

“I didn’t think we shot bad shots,” Larson said. “I thought everything was in the flow of our offense.”

Morgan Fiedler and Olivia Hanson each scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack for Roncalli. Madelyn Bragg added nine, and Ava Hanson followed with eight.

Jaiden Bauer and Paige Snell each scored seven points for Webster.

Roncalli is back in action Saturday when it plays at Milbank Area.

“Road conference games are not always easy, especially when you’re playing three games in six days,” Larson said. “We’ve kind of gotten use to playing on the road.”
