WARNER – Warner produced a strong-second half effort to produce a victory over Aberdeen Roncalli Saturday night.
The Monarchs outscored Roncalli 33-19 in the final 16 minutes to record a 55-44 non-conference boys’ basketball win.
Warner was able to get to the free-throw line throughout the contest, where it outscored the Cavaliers 13-1.
“We were a little too aggressive in some ways, defensively at least,” said Roncalli coach Dan Gallagher. “I thought overall we played really well defensively, we just could not get a shot to fall whatsoever. A lot of them were shots we probably didn’t need to be taking, too.”
The Cavaliers led 17-8 early in the second quarter and took a three-point lead into the break thanks to an Aiden Fisher three-pointer.
The contest was a back and forth battle before Roncalli’s offense dried up.
“Eventually our shots just stopped falling and they continued to find decent looks, they’d get offensive boards, they found ways to get to the line,” Gallagher said. “The free-throw line definitely hurt us today. They got 17 trips compared to our two. Free throws are going to help win games.”
Gallagher said part of the issue was his team’s lack of finishing off drives to the basket and trying to draw fouls on the Monarchs.
“Our shots weren’t falling from the perimeter so we tried to attempt some by going to the hole, but we were fading away rather than attacking the basket, going to the rim, looking for a way to the free-throw line,” Gallagher said. “We kind of bailed them out in ways, where we got good drives and then kind of pulled up vs. continuing our attack.”
Keegan Stewart had 22 points to lead the Cavalilers, who played without starter Maddox May, out with illness.
Hunter Cramer and Peyton Jung each scored 14 points to lead Warner. Ashton Schuchhardt followed with 12 and Levi Scepaniak contributed nine.
Gallagher said that Jung and Schuchhardt also did some major damage on the boards.
“Those two got a total of nine offensive rebounds,” Gallagher said, “and at least five of them resulted in points.”
Roncalli, 3-5 on the season, heads to Miller for a non-conference contest on Tuesday.
