Battlers pressure Roncalli for 11th victory

HOVEN – Fifth-rated Potter County relied on one of its staples to fuel a non-conference boys’ basketball victory over Aberdeen Roncalli Tuesday night.

The Battlers cranked up their pressure defense and improved to 11-1 on the season with a 68-40 triumph.

Potter County jumped on the Cavaliers right from the start, opening a 19-4 lead at one stage in the first quarter. Things only tougher for Roncalli in the second period as the hosts produced 31 points to take a 50-22 halftime advantage.

Drake Bassett scored 10 points in the second quarter to power the Potter County attack. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers struggled with 28 turnovers and 16 fouls in the opening half.

The Battlers featured a balanced attack en route to the victory.

Grant Luikens scored 20 points and Bassett followed with 18. Cooper Logan added 12 points, all in the first 16 minutes, and Seth Sharp contributed 10 points.

Potter County, which started the season with six straight wins, now owns a five-game winning streak.

Maddox May topped Roncalli with 11 points. Maddox Miller and Keegan Stewart each added six.

The Cavaliers, 4-10 on the season, will look to turn things around when they host Clark-Willow Lake in a Northeast Conference contest at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Roncalli Gym. The game is part of a girls-boys doubleheader with the girls starting at 6:30 p.m.
