HARRISBURG – Jaylee Hofer made a last-second shot in overtime to lift Harrisburg to a 40-38 win over Aberdeen Central in an Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ basketball game Friday night.

The shot ended a night of close action which saw the Golden Eagles miss a last-second attempt at victory in regulation

Central started off in a hole, trailing 16-7 after the first eight minutes, but battled back.

“Turnovers and execution got the better of us,” said Central coach Mikayla Arechigo, who saw many positives on the night. “We had so many girls settle into roles tonight. Grace Kuch, Abby Berry and Karly Wellman did exactly what we needed on the boards and defensive end. Madi Struble came in and played solid minutes in the first half when we had two bigs in foul trouble.”

Both teams made the same number of three pointers and free throws. The Tigers simply made one more field goal in the contest for the final margin of difference.

Emilee Boyer scored 14 points to lead Harrisburg, while Hofer followed with 12.

Central’s Kyra Griese led all players with 17 points, including four three-point field goals. Kiana Mounga contributed nine points and Taryn Hermansen eight.

Arechigo said it was too bad the Eagles came up just short after doing so many things well.

“It’s unfortunate when the kids don’t get to see the winning result they worked for,” she said. “Our challenge as a team is to keep working and looking forward.”

The Eagles, 2-12 on the season, play host to Mitchell in another ESD contest at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Golden Eagles Arena.
