A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 20-26:

Last year on Feb. 24, 2021: Northern State dominated the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men’s basketball awards as Parker Fox was named the NSIC North Division Player and Defensive Player of the Year, and landed on the all-conference first team alongside Mason Stark. Andrew Kallman and Tommy Chatman earned second team and honorable mention selections. Head coach Saul Phillips received North Division Coach of the Year after leading the Wolves to a 15-1 record and their fourth straight North Division Championship.

10 years ago on Feb. 25, 2012: Senior Louie Krogman (White River) capped off his brilliant University of South Dakota men’s basketball career by finishing with 1,644 career points (sixth all-time at USD), including 292 three-pointers (second behind Josh Mueller’s 307 from 2001-05). That gives Krogman career combined high school and college totals of 5,165 points, including 680 three pointers.

20 years ago on Feb. 21-24, 2002: Aberdeen is hosting the NSIC indoor track and field championships at the Barnett Center Feb. 21-23; the NCAA DII Midwest Regional Wrestling Tournament at the Barnett Center Feb. 24; the 55th annual State Amateur Basketball Class A and B championships at the Strode Center Feb. 23-24; and the South Dakota Pee Wee B Hockey State Tournament at the Holum Expo Building Feb. 22-24.

30 years ago on Feb. 21, 1992: Eric Bauer made two free throws with five seconds left to give Faulkton a 73-71 win over Sully Buttes. Brent Witte led the Trojans with 31 points while Norm Meyer scored 24 for Buttes.

40 years ago on Feb. 20, 1982: Mobridge nipped Redfield 122.5-114.5 to win the State B wrestling tourney. Mobridge got a state championship from Kyle Jensen (heavyweight) while Redfield got a state title from Gene Hoffart (105). Meanwhile, Mike Wiley of Webster (112); Bart Wiley of Webster (119); and Mark Berens of Selby (138) also won state titles. Coach Rod Moon’s Mobridge Tigers recaptured the state title they won in 1980, and the title that was lost to coach Fran Esser’s Redfield Pheasants last year.

50 years ago on Feb. 20, 1972: Former Northern star and tourney MVP DuWayne Groos along with Bill Kohn combined for 39 points to lead Lemmon past Sioux Falls 81-64 to win the state amateur basketball championship in Mobridge. Enshrined into the amateur hall of fame were Bob Marske of Andover and Aberdeen sports editor Larry Desautels. The 6-foot-9 Marske led eight amateur teams to state championship and in his high school (Andover), college (Northern) and amateur basketball career, he played in more than 600 games and scored more than 15,000 points.
