A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Feb. 27-March 5:

Last year on March 4, 2021: Conference weight throw and shot put champion Tanner Berg (Watertown) of Northern State was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor season. He will compete in both events at the upcoming national championships.

10 years ago on March 3, 2012: During one stretch of the second half of the District 2B boys’ basketball championship, Langford shot 1-for-17 from the field and actually gained a point on Warner. Langford eventually won the contest 42-38.

20 years ago on March 5, 2002: Eric Heien nailed the game-winning shot with two seconds left as Gettysburg won the Region 7B basketball championship 69-67 over McLaughlin to give the Battlers their first state tournament berth since 1974.

30 years ago on March 29, 1992: Wagner won the State B wrestling title at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen. Individual state champs included Todd Keller of Mobridge (125 pounds); Chad Forman of Miller (145 pounds); Stu Larson of Sully Buttes (160 pounds) and Ryan Resel of Miller (189 pounds). Winning the 152-pound division and his fifth state title was Lincoln McIlravy of Philip, who would win a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

40 years ago on March 3, 1982: Wade Rozell had 31 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists to lead Warner to a 77-62 win over Hosmer, the Monarchs’ first ever region title and trip to the State B tourney. There was a report of Christmas lights in the form of the number 1 on a Warner farm north of town after the historic win.

50 years ago on March 5, 1972: Pro golfer Marlene Bauer Hagge, who learned to play on Aberdeen’s old Lee Park course, won the recent Burdine Open in Miami to earn $4,500. The 38-year-old, who was one of the original 13 founders of the LPGA in 1950, remains one of the top women’s players in the world.
