NEC wrestlers have strong opening day at state tourney

SIOUX FALLS – A delegation of wrestlers from the Northeast Conference had a strong opening day during the State B Wrestling Tournament in Sioux Falls on Thursday.

A total of 11 members of the NEC reached the semifinal round with back-to-back victories, one of them in Class A.

Redfield lead the way with four wrestlers in the semis: Brady Risetter at 106 pounds, Mason Fey at 160 pounds, Corbin Schwartz at 182 pounds, and Grady Fey at heavyweight.

Webster also had a strong showing, placing three members into the semifinals. That group includes Cael Larson at 132 pounds, Annie Witt at 154 pounds, and Caleb McGregor at 220 pounds.

Clark-Willow Lake’s Gunnar Kvistad qualified for the semis at 152 pounds, and Lucas Kannegieter punched his ticket at 170. Groton’s Lane Kruger advanced to the semifinals at Heavyweight.

Canton leads the Class B team points. Redfield is currently in sixth.

In the Class A portion of the tourney, Milbank Area’s Barrett Schneck advanced to the semis at 160 pounds.
