A group of Aberdeen Roncalli seniors closed out their careers at Roncalli Gym Thursday night much like they’ve performed throughout the years: with another dominating performance.
The top-rated Cavaliers scored the first 14 points and never looked back on the way to a 60-27 win over Wilmot during the Region 1B girls’ basketball tournament.
While the contest was the final home game for a group of five senior starters, Roncalli coach Derek Larson said that was not the focus going into the contest.
“We didn’t mention that much,” Larson said, “but they’ve won a lot of games in this place and I think you could probably seriously count on one hand how many times they’ve lost in our home gym. I’m really proud of them, especially our seniors tonight.”
While the seniors weren’t focused on the home finale, senior Allie Morgan said playing at Roncalli Gym has provided special memories through the years.
“I would just say the atmosphere,” Morgan said of what she will remember most, pointing out Roncalli’s loyal fan base. “That’s why I love our gym and I like playing here. Everyone is just so supportive.”
Playing in their first post-season game since winning the Class A state championship last season, the Cavaliers came out focused from the opening tip and dominated on both ends of the court against the Wolves.
The game was unique in the fact that Roncalli didn’t know who its opponent was going to be until Wednesday evening because the weather postponed the Wilmot-Langford Area contest twice.
“Usually we take a few days to prepare for each team,” Morgan said. “It was a lot different. (Thursday) we found out our lineups right after school so we had to prepare then.”
The quick prep didn’t hinder the hosts as the Cavaliers exploited Wilmot’s zone defense designed to stop Roncalli center Madalyn Bragg.
That strategy was foiled as the Cavaliers nailed one long-range shot after another.
“We knew we had to pick a poison. The Bragg girl is everything she’s cracked up to be, so that’s what we wanted to take away as best we could,” said Wilmot coach James Remund. “Shooters have bad nights. We hoped for that. We did not get that.”

Morgan Fiedler led the Cavaliers with 16 points, including four three-point field goals. Olivia Hanson followed with 12 points, and Bragg finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Madeline Remund topped the Wolves with nine points.
Wilmot played its best basketball ball down the stretch, going nearly .500 the final month of the season.
Coach Remund was proud of his team’s effort.
“Every locker room is tough when it’s over,” he said. “We’re just glad we got to play one more day.”
Roncalli improved to 20-1 with the victory and now will face Britton-Hecla in the Region 1B semifinals at 4 p.m. Saturday in Webster.
While the Cavaliers won a previous matchup against the Braves, Larson said his team is not about to overlook any opponent in the post season.
“You slip up one night and the season’s over,” Larson said. “We really want to make sure that we’re focused (today) in practice and do a good job on Saturday.”
