IPSWICH – Aberdeen Christian went outside the three-point line to turn its fortunes around in a 61-47 win over Ipswich Tuesday night.

The fourth-rated Knights made nine three-pointers, including three straight to start the second half to help fuel the Lake Region Conference boys’ basketball victory.

Christian trailed 17-12 in the second quarter before a three-pointer from Ethan Russell sparked a 14-0 surge to help change the momentum. Andrew Brennan then nailed a pair of treys to start the second half as the Knights built a double-digit advantage.

“I thought that run to close the first half really helped get some separation,” said Christian coach David Rohrbach. “And then the 9-0 run to start the third quarter with threes from Andrew Brennan and Kaden Clark to open the quarter really helped push our lead to double digits.”

The Tigers never went away, though. They hit seven three-pointers of their own and had the margin down to 47-38 midway through the final quarter.

“We hedged and switched well at times, and then other times would miss an assignment and leave a shooter or not finish a possession and they hurt us,” Rohrbach said. “But a good win against a solid team.”

Russell had 17 points and Jackson Isakson had 16 to lead four Knights in double figures. Brennan added 11 and Malek Wieker contributed 10.

Ipswich received 15 points from Taylor Thorson, nine from Trevor Beyers and eight from Carter Geditz.

Christian, 14-2 and winner of 10 straight, takes on Howard during the DWU Classic at 9 p.m. Saturday in Salem. The Tigers are 13-2 on the season.

“They will be a tough matchup,” Rohrbach said. “They have size inside and some pieces around their post player. We’ll definitely have to come ready to go.”
