AGENCY VILLAGE – Tiospa Zina received points from 10 different players and grabbed a 63-38 Northeast Conference boys’ basketball win over Aberdeen Roncalli Monday night.

The hosts took advantage of offensive rebounds to build a lead. They also got three-point field goals from six different members to stay in control.

“They beat us with back door cuts. They beat us with offensive rebounding and second-chance opportunities,” said Roncalli coach Dan Gallagher, noting the Wambdi had nine points in the opening half on offensive rebounds.

Roncalli closed the opening half with a flurry to pull back to within 29-19 as the Cavaliers took advantage of a zone defense.

However, the squad never really got into much of a rhythm on the night and was unable to make a serious run in the second half.

“We didn’t’ get a lot going there. We forced a lot up too, whether it was trying to push things that weren’t there or forcing things down low to Maddox (May),” Gallagher said. “I mean Maddox played well, but we tried to get him a few too many touches when they were doubling down or he was slipping. They had great help side.”

Meanwhile, the Wambdi ran its offense through Jasiah Red Bear. While the standout led TZ with 11 points, he created a lot of scoring opportunities for his teammates.

“You help down on Red Bear and he kicks it out and they get a three off it. You help down from another post, he dumps it off and they get a quick two,” Gallagher said. “He’s a good passer, too. He gets a lot of credit for his scoring, but he’s a good passer.”

Perry Lufkins contributed 10 points to the Tiospa Zina total, Reondre Greeley followed with nine and Devin Long Crow added eight.

Keegan Stewart and Maddox May each scored 11 points to power the Cavaliers.

Roncalli, 5-12 on the season, faces cross-town foe Aberdeen Christian at the Civic Arena at about 8 p.m. Thursday. The contest will be preceded by a girls’ game at 6:30 p.m.

“We’re obvioulsy, familiar with them,” Gallagher said of the football cooperative between the two schools. “They’ve got seven or eight guys that play football with us. That’s half our team, too.”

Gallagher knows the third-rated Knights feature plenty of scoring options.

“I don’t think there is a way to pick your poison against Aberdeen Christian,” Gallagher said. “They’ve got Malek (Wieker), they’ve got (Ethan) Russell, Jackson (Isakson). Even Andrew (Brennan) and Kaden (Clark), who might be seen more as role players, they can consistently hit double digits, too. It’s just having to stay solid on your man, and know where the help side is going to be, but you can’t leave anyone.”
