Athletes experience unique success at Donat Classic

A group of athletes turned in top performances in ways they weren’t necessarily expecting to during the Dewey Donat Classic indoor track and field meet at the Barnett Center on Tuesday.

Ty Kadlec of Ipswich won the 200-meter dash in a race that he wasn’t even scheduled to compete in when the day started. The senior filled in for his teammate Carter Geditz and ended up edging other teammates Carson Gohl and Colby Sylte to take first place.

When asked about the last minute substitution, Kadlec responded, “It was alright, because it’s just a 200. At least it’s not a long distance one.”

To show what’s inside Kadlec, he turned in a quality anchor leg, rallying his team to victory in the slower heat of the 1,600-meter relay. While he knew his team stood little chance to win the event, that did not mean a less than all-out effort.

So why dig deep in that situation?

“Because coach (Todd Thorson) tells us to go 110 percent all the time,” Kadlec said, “and it’s just going to help us in the end more.”

Kadlec has goals of breaking the school record in the 100, 200 and 400 this season and then placing in them or winning them at state.

As for Monday’s meet, he wasn’t too caught up in his times.

“Mostly compete and get better,” Kadlec said of what he was trying to accomplish, “that’s pretty much all.”

Aberdeen Christian’s Rachel Beaner turned in a strong showing in a race that she doesn’t even normally compete in. The junior finished second in the 1,600-meter run.

When asked about her race strategy, Beaner said, “It was really tough to know where I was at, plus I really didn’t have a strategy because I haven’t raced it in like four years.”

Beaner was running third before closing with a flurry to overtake the second place runner with less than a lap remaining. Beaner knew she had a chance to catch her.

“I could tell, because with five laps to go I was quite a ways behind,” Beaner said, “and then she just slowly got closer until the last lap she was right in front of me.”

Beaner, who competed in two events at last year’s state meet, would like to at least duplicate that this year.

“I kind of want to make it to state in two or three events at the end of the year,” she said, “so today was just kind of like a training run.”

A pair of jumpers also experienced success in ways they weren’t quite expecting.

Abe Kretchman of Aberdeen Christian and Camryn Rohlfs of Redfield turned in quality performances in the long jump and were surprised by their marks.

Kretchman ended up leaping a personal record 19-feet 11-inches on his final attempt.

“It was pretty good. I definitely say I can jump farther,” Kretchman said. “The last one didn’t feel good even though it was a PR. It didn’t feel good. I was expecting it to be about a foot shorter than what it was.”

The junior also placed in the 200-meter dash.

Kretchman said he has some established goals for the long jump this spring.

“At least a 20-foot jump, that’s really accomplishable, placing at state for sure. I want to do that in long jump,” he said. “The 200 I just want to get better at running.”

Rohlfs just missed a PR on the way to winning the long jump.

The junior said she wasn’t even thinking about getting a personal record on the day.

“I was hoping to get a mark on,” Rohlfs said.

Instead, she was just a few inches away from her all-time best leap.

Rohlfs took advantage of the contained environment in the Barnett Center to top the field.

“Outdoors there’s wind,” Rohlfs said. “It’s been pretty windy the past couple of weeks at practice, so I haven’t jumped that far, yet.”

While Rohlfs just missed a PR in the long jump, she did get a PR in the 55-meter dash.

Rohlfs was a state place winner in both the 100 and long jump last year. She said the 55 is a much different race than the 100.

“That one’s all about start,” Rohlfs said of the 55, “and it’s a lot quicker.”

The meet marked the final indoor competition for Aberdeen Christian. Coach Sam Bjorkman liked what he saw out of his squads on Monday.

“It definitely was a good meet all around,” he said.

“Shawnteah (La Croix) ran really well in the 55s, a little stiffer competition today, but had a great race,” Bjorkman said. “She had another PR there in the 55s, so that was fun. She PR’d in the 200 as well and came in second.”

Bjorkman also pointed out the effort of Beaner in the 1,600.

“Rachel getting second in the mile, which is not typically her kind of go-to race, on a track that’s really hard to pace on, that was pretty exciting there,’ he said. “I’m hopeful for the mile and two-mile for her throughout the year.”

While the Knights were light on the boys’ side, Bjorkman mentioned a pair of jumpers.

“Abe and Jackson (Isakson) did well in the long jump,” Bjorkman said. “Abe actually snuck out a PR in the long jump, so that was good.”
