BROOKINGS – The Aberdeen Central boys won two individual events on the way to a second place finish in team points, while the Golden Eagles finished fourth in the girls’ team standings at the Ruth Marske Invitational indoor track and field meet Monday in Brookings.

Brandon Valley won the boys’ division while Sioux Falls Lincoln won the girls’ crown.

“I thought we had a good day overall,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley. “Placing second in a 20-team meet is a good starting point for us.”

The Eagles were led by Josh Martin and Sam Rohlfs.

Martin set a new meet record in winning the 1,600-meter run in a time of 4:24.01 and was also third in the 3,200-meter run.

Rohlfs won the long jump and took third in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash.

Other top finishes for the Eagles came from Jacob Merxbauer who was second in the triple jump, Aiden Heimann who was fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, Jett Carlson who tied for fourth in the high jump, and Isaac Ligon who tied for fourth in the pole vault.

“We saw a lot of good things from all our kids,” Murley said, “and are happy with the competitive effort.”

The Central girls were led by a pair of second-place finishes. Taryn Hermansen finished second in the shot put and Ciara Franks tied for second in the high jump. Kaylie Peldo was fifth in the 3,200-meter run.

“We had a good first meet for our kids. We performed quite well in field events led by Ciara Franks and Taryn Hermansen,” said Central girls’ coach Jim Appl. “We placed in all the field events, and ran well in the 4X100 and short sprints. We set good starting points in the 400 through 3,200. It was a good start and I’m excited for our kids.”
